Title: Youth research and policy and the European level – developments at the University of Glamorgan
Authors: Williamson, Howard. J
Abstract: Just a few years ago, the University of Glamorgan with its relatively small ‘divisions’ in the social sciences had a rather limited profile in the youth field. The profile it had, largely around youth homelessness, was restricted to the United Kingdom and was primarily located in Wales. As a ‘post-1992’ British university (a former polytechnic), the University of Glamorgan hadslowly developed not only a reputation for teaching quality but also – in the context of itsparticular history and traditions – some name in research and policy engagement. It is to be hoped that that name is increasingly crossing international boundaries and that, in particular, associations will come to be made more immediately between the University of Glamorgan and its specific contribution to youth research and policy in Europe.

European youth policy

Title: European youth policy
Authors: Williamson, Howard J.
Abstract: In an earlier contribution to Youth and Policy, the author had considered the increasing convergence in youth policy development and implementation at a European level between the Council of Europe and the European Union. This article interrogates the central planks of such ‘youth policy’ evolution in the context of the challenges around the social condition of young people in Europe, in relation to education, the labour market, health, housing and justice and in the context of youth participation, youth mobility and out of school learning.
